Product Description
Canon is an industry leader in professional and consumer imaging equipment and information systems. Canon’s extensive product line enables businesses and consumers worldwide to capture, store and distribute visual information.

This case is perfect for my SD550 or any similar sized camera. My camera fits snug and it’s the least bulky case I’ve come across. One drawback however: Since it is optimized to be as slim as possible there is NO room for an additional memory card or battery. This poses no problem for me as I only use this case to carry the camera in my pocket. All accessories are in my large camera bag.

Both the back and the front of this small case are designed with a hard stiff front and back designed to protect the LCD monitor. There are NO zippers to scratch the polished metal or LCD of your camera. The case opens with a velcro tab which holds the camera very securely.

One other case I would consider is the Lowepro D-Pod 10 which is slightly more bulky but does provide a bit more protection. I have both and use both depending on the amount of protection desired. My dad owns only the PSC-55 as it provides plenty of protection for him.

This is a very nice case and reasonably priced.

Cheap High Definition Video Processor DVDO EDGE

DVDO EDGE High Definition Video Processor

Technical Details

  • World Class Video Processing with award winning Video Reference Series technology by Anchor Bay delivers the most detailed Full HD 1080p images to an HDTV from all video sources of any quality
  • 10 Inputs including 6 HDMI 1.3 inputs and user-defined automatic switching
  • Setup Wizards and included remote control make installation a breeze
  • Eliminate ¿Black Bars¿ with intuitive zoom controls
  • Low Latency Processing for Gamers

Product Description

Manufacturer’s Description
The DVDO EDGE is a video processor and A/V hub that gives you the best HD quality from standard video sources like standard DVD and standard cable, satellite or broadcast television signals. The secret is in the outboard video processor’s computer processing capabilities, which provide deinterlacing and scaling far superior to that included in most HDTVs or upconverting DVD players. Perhaps the most amazing thing about the EDGE is that it provides the kind of technology that previously cost 5-15 times the retail price of the EDGE.

The EDGE converts standard definition, high definition and PC signals from up to ten sources (including six HDMI 1.3 compatible devices) at any source resolution up to 1080p. EDGE has a very intuitive user interface which makes installation a breeze. EDGE has two HDMI 1.3 outputs, one with audio and video and one with audio only to facilitate connections to an HDMI/DVI equipped display and HDMI AV Receiver. An optical audio output is available for older AV Receivers. A back lit universal remote control with a luxurious “soft-touch” finish is also included.

Fine Detail & Edge Enhancement

Sharpness controls are not new in the world of video - nearly every TV sold in the last 20 years features a sharpness control. However, sharpening controls merely accentuate medium detail at the expense of fine detail and often add horrible “halos” around the edges and lines. While this trick was a reasonable approach for standard definition TV, when screen sizes were well under 30 inches, today’s large screen TVs and HDTVs have made traditional sharpness controls highly undesirable since the damage they cause is now magnified with such larger screens. In addition, traditional sharpening controls tend to exaggerate any noise in the image by making it more pronounced so noise becomes even more pronounced when viewed on a large screen HDTV.

Anchor Bay has designed Fine Detail & Edge Enhancement with large screen HDTVs in mind. Using patent pending technology, Fine Detail & Edge Enhancement is able to isolate areas of the image where hard edges are prevalent and increase fine details without adding halos or ringing. The net effect is quite extraordinary - images have more “pop” and fine detail such as blades of grass or even the pores on an actor’s face are drawn out making your large screen HDTV even more enjoyable. Moreover, Mosquito Noise Reduction can be used to remove objectionable ringing and noise in the image before using Fine Detail & Edge Enhancement to draw out the fine details in the image.

Precision Deinterlacing

Anchor Bay’s 10-bit Precision Deinterlacing of standard and high definition delivers the image quality demanded by today’s large-screen, high-resolution displays. It eliminates many of the artifacts found in common deinterlacers to produce a smooth image, free of artifacts such as jagged edges and combing. All processing is performed at full 10-bit resolution to preserve all the detail and subtle nuances in the video source. Edge-adaptive processing uses an adaptive, continuous-angle detection algorithm to accurately identify and smooth image edges. Unique, “any-cadence” processing automatically locks to the wide variety of film and animation cadences found in current video sources, including non-standard cadences, and will track right through many types of “bad edits” and cadence changes.

  • Five-field motion adaptive deinterlacing for video sources
  • Advanced cadence detection for film and animation sources
  • Game Mode with very low latency (sub-1 frame delay) for maximum “playability”
  • Edge adaptive processing to produce smooth diagonal edges
  • Three frame video processing delay (Max)
  • Arbitrary cadence detection (any:any) to detect non-standard cadences in input signals.
    • Reliable 2:2 pull-down detection for 50Hz countries
    • Detection of 2:2 ↔ 3:2 crossfades and out of phase 3:2 crossfades
    • Detection of multiple source types within a frame
    • Bad edit detection and compensation to minimize artifacts caused by sequence breaks in film content

Precision Video Scaling

Anchor Bay’s 10-bit Precision Video Scaling technology is based on Anchor Bay’s proprietary video scaling engine that can independently scale an image horizontally and vertically to achieve an outstanding picture quality for today’s high resolution video displays. The scaling engine is completely flexible, accepting standard definition (480p, 576p) and high definition (720p, 1080i and 1080p) inputs and outputting the most popular resolutions from VGA (640×480) to 1080p (1920×1080). Since the scaling engine is completely flexible, other image manipulation features are also supported including zoom and pan.

PReP, Progressive ReProcessing

Anchor Bay’s Progressive ReProcessing (PReP) is the video processing industry’s first processing method that significantly improves progressive video signals and removes artifacts caused by inferior interlaced-to-progressive conversion.

Video signals that originate in an interlaced format are often degraded by artifacts incurred when the signal is converted from interlaced to progressive formats by general purpose chips in DVD players, AV receivers, and set-top boxes. Until now, there has been no way to improve these signals to optimize images on high-resolution displays. Poor interlaced-to-progressive conversion is especially problematic with large-screen HDTVs, as upscaling to higher resolutions often amplifies artifacts created in the conversion process, making them more noticeable.

As a solution to this problem, Anchor Bay introduces PReP, an advanced video processing technology that reverts the progressive video signal output from source equipment to its original interlaced format. PReP then converts the interlaced signal to progressive format, this time applying the source, edge, and motion adaptive algorithms in its Precision Deinterlacing technology to eliminate jaggies, combing, and other degrading effects. PReP technology allows 480p, 576p, 1080p/50, 1080p/60, and other formats to be processed by this method.

Progressive Cadence Detection

Film-based content, which originated at 24 frames per second, is broadcast at 50 or 60Hz. Anchor Bay’s Progressive Cadence Detection can lock on to the original 3:2 cadence in the broadcast, reacquiring the original 24 frames per second. This signal can then be output at a source-locked 24Hz eliminating the judder that existed in the original broadcast signal. Progressive Cadence Detection can be used with 480p, 576p, 720p and 1080p input signals.

RightRate

Anchor Bay’s RightRate technology converts the input frame rate to the optimal display frame rate without causing ‘tearing’ in the output frame. Anchor Bay’s high performance frame rate conversion also supports converting film sources from 24 frames per second to 60 frames per second for NTSC format and from 25 frames per second to 50 frames per second for PAL/SECAM format.

AutoCUE-C

Anchor Bay’s AutoCUE-C technology automatically detects and removes chroma artifacts that are caused by incorrect upsampling of the chroma (color) signals by MPEG decoders in DVD players and satellite receivers. These artifacts are especially noticeable as horizontal streaks in images with highly saturated colors. When the artifacts are removed, the resulting picture quality is significantly improved, providing a much clearer and true-to-life image.

Precision AV Lip-Sync

Anchor Bay’s Precision AV Lip-Sync technology is designed to automatically delay the audio signal to match the video processing delay in other Anchor Bay products. As a result, the AV Lip-Sync problem that is caused by video processing delay is eliminated. If required, the audio delay can also be further adjusted (up to 200 milliseconds) to correct any AV Lip-Sync problem that may be already be present in the AV source.

Game Mode

Game Mode can reduce the amount of video delay to less than a single frame. In many competitive processors the effects of applying complex algorithms to the video image results in upwards of a seven frame delay. This can inhibit the real-time performance for gamers who want instantaneous response to react to stimuli and to realize peak performance from their application. The VRS Precision Deinterlacing Game Mode will reduce frame delay down to slightly less than one frame of video.

Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
Yamaha’s YST-SW315 offers 250 high-efficiency watts–enough power to deliver shattering, movie-theater-like bass effects. Full enjoyment of Dolby Digital and DTS surround sources requires deep, clear bass. This is especially true with 5.1- and 6.1-channel sound, because the “.1″ channel is dedicated to the bass frequencies. That means you not only need a subwoofer, but a high-power subwoofer capable of handling extremely low frequencies. The YST-SW315’s down-firing 10-inch driver translates power into clean bass sound, and the YST-SW315 boasts a frequency response of 20 to 160 Hz (-10 dB at the extremes of the range). The YST-SW315 delivers high power at deep bass frequencies, with excellent stability and low power consumption. This is made possible by the sub’s highly efficient PWM (pulse-wave modulation) digital-drive power amplifier. The amplifier achieves superior conversion efficiency by minimizing power loss from the power transistors. It delivers stable audio power while minimizing AC power consumption and heat production. As it requires no output filter coil, it’s extremely quiet with low distortion.

Yamaha’s patented Advanced Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST) generates incredible bass from small speaker enclosures. This system uses negative-impedance feedback in the amp and a Helmholtz resonator in the speaker to provide strong and accurate bass.

QD-Bass (Quatre Dispersion Bass) technology uses a down-firing driver with square, pyramid-shaped reflective plates to radiate sound efficiently in four horizontal directions. The reflective plates (not used in other brands’ down-firing subwoofers) negate any effects caused by the floor surface and reduce resonance between sound waves reflected from the floor and the unit. Most other systems use circular cones, but the YST-SW315 avoids firing sound into the legs of the cabinet by radiating in four directions. Changing the height of the pyramid varies the acoustic load, permitting relatively simple high-cut adjustment and improving bandpass properties. QD-Bass also grants greater freedom of placement, since the sound radiates with equal effectiveness in all directions.

The user-adjustable, continuously variable high-cut filter sets the highest frequency the subwoofer will deliver. It can be set anywhere from 40 to 140 Hz. For instance, if the filter is set at 75 Hz, only frequencies 75 Hz or below will be delivered by the subwoofer. This allows the sub’s output to be matched to the lowest reproducible frequency of other speakers in the system and the room’s acoustics for a seamless presentation.

The rotary volume control permits the perfect matching of the sub’s output to the overall volume of the system. The YST-SW315 has a signal-sensing circuit. When the subwoofer detects an audio signal, it turns its power on. When it senses no signal for several minutes, it shuts itself off.

Yamaha’s BASS (Bass Action Selector Switch) tailors the sub’s output for video or music at the touch of a switch. Two sets of inputs let the sub accept either line- or speaker-level inputs, while a handy phase normal/reverse switch makes it easy to phase the subwoofer with the other speakers in your system.

Three-way speaker terminals accept banana plug and a variety of other connectors, as well as speaker wire, and the YST-SW315’s thick, rigid MDF cabinet reduces vibrations and resonance. The speaker’s handsome black-ash finish blends in with room decor and complements many furnishing styles, and it’s magnetically shielded so you can place it near a TV or computer monitor without degrading the picture.

Customer Reviews

The speakers, for what it is worth, sound pretty good. They will shake you in the car, but it isn’t going to be felt more than a few feet from the car or anything like that. If you will notice, it doesn’t say how big the amp is. This was a circuit city black friday ad a couple years ago, and they don’t list the wattage of the amp either, so it is a mystery. Still, for the price they are very nice and I am pleased with them. I have them hooked up with the mystery amp, and they hit pretty hard in the car. They are a good starter set. As for long term use, I don’t know, as I have only had them hooked up for a few days. So far, I am happy with them, and I would recommend them to someone who wants a little more bump in their audio for not a lot of cash.

Manufacturer Description

The 9.1-megapixel Panasonic DMC-TZ5 packs a 28mm wide-angle, 10x optical zoom Leica DC lens in a compact design, ideal for the active photographer who needs a versatile camera. By combining a 28mm wide-angle lens, which lets you capture a wider-framed shot when compared to a traditional 35mm camera, with the TZ-Series 10x optical zoom, you’re empowered to take expanded shots, both wide and far. Panasonic’s Intelligent Auto technologies are also expanded, with new Intelligent Exposure and Digital Red-eye Correction.

With the addition of Intelligent Exposure and Digital Red-eye Correction, Panasonic’s Advanced Intelligent Auto mode consists of seven intuitive technologies, all which are specifically designed to help make photo-taking an enjoyable and seamless process unnoticed by the consumer — helping them to take clear photos. When in Advanced Intelligent Auto mode, the following technologies all operate automatically; no settings need to be manually changed.

Also new to the TZ5 is the Venus Engine IV, Panasonic’s new high-performance image processing LSI. The Venus Engine IV produces higher-quality pictures than its predecessor, the Venus Engine III, by using a more advanced signal processing system. The new Venus Engine IV also improves noise reduction, elevates the detection accuracy and corrective effects in both Mega O.I.S. and Intelligent ISO and reduces the shutter release time lag. Both models also incorporate Intelligent LCD, which detects the lighting condition and controls the brightness level of the LCD in 11 fine steps, to offer optimal clarity in any situation, whether dark or light; indoors or outdoors. With a newly developed 460,000-dot high resolution in the TZ5’s 3.0-inch LCD, photos can be easily viewed on the display, regardless of the shooting environment.

The TZ5 is also capable of recording 720p high-definition motion pictures, and because of its support of SD memory cards, is easily compatible with Panasonic Viera plasma HDTVs that have an integrated SD memory card slot, so viewing photos is simple. Also, with the newly added HD component output capability, users can also connect the TZ5 to an HDTV and watch a slideshow complete with mood-appropriate music, choosing from natural, slow, urban and swing.

Lumix DMC-TZ5A Highlights

Intelligent Exposure With this new feature, photos will no longer be under- or over-exposed. Instead, the TZ5 instantly analyzes the framed image and adjusts the brightness in areas that are too dark because of dim lighting, backlighting or the use of the flash. The camera will automatically adjust the brightness accordingly.

Digital Red-eye Correction This feature helps to eliminate the red-eye problem that sometimes results when taking flash shots at the night. Incorporated into the built-in flash, the camera emits a small preliminary flash before the main flash, detects red-eye and will digitally correct it.

Mega O.I.S. Gyrosensors detect hand-shake and the lens system shifts to compensate, helping to prevent hand-shake from creating a blurry image.

Intelligent ISO With Intelligent ISO, the TZ5 can determine if the photo subject is moving and change the ISO setting and shutter speed accordingly, thus giving a blur-free photo.

Intelligent Scene Selector Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions, recognizes the shooting environment and will automatically select the appropriate scene mode from: Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode. This intuitive technology, helps you use the most common scene modes that are built into the camera, but often go unused, without making any manual adjustments.

Face Detection Panasonic’s Face Detection detects faces anywhere in the frame and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure settings so portraits come out clear and crisp. Detecting up to 15 faces, Panasonic’s Face Detection can even track a face if the subject is moving.

Customer Reviews

The TZ5 is in a class of its own, offering both a wide angle lens and an excellent zoom.
In addition, the specs show an excellent 3″ LCD screen and HD video recording. The TZ3 (the predecessor of the TZ5) is one of the top recommended compact cameras on many camera review sites. The other camera that consistently tops the charts is the canon sd870is. Because the canon sd870is and the TZ5 are among the few compact cameras that have a wide angle (28mm) lens, I will reference the sd870is at times during this review as a comparison. Again, please keep in mind that these cameras aren’t necessarily in the same class (the canon has a 28-105mm zoom lens and the Panasonic TZ5 has a 28-280mm zoom lens). Also, while I have used a TZ3, I don’t actually own one.

Design:

Excellent, in fact there are very few things I can see that they could have done better. The body of the camera is very well designed and mostly made of metal (another reviewer wrote that it is made of plastic - it’s not). I haven’t used/seen the black or silver cameras, but the blue color looks very nice and adds texture to the camera making it easier to grip. The TZ5 isn’t as compact as some other cameras like the sd870is, and therefore isn’t as pocketable. However, for the vast majority of applications, and as a travel camera, it is the perfect size. You can use this camera easily with one hand, in contrast with smaller cameras like those in the canon digital elph series. All of the controls are easy to use and access and the majority of camera looks/feels of very high quality (exceptions: the power switch and the AV door on the side are a little sketchy, also the tripod mount is plastic). The screen on the back is beautiful, but lacks anti-reflective coating like the sd870is. As other reviewers have noted, the improvement in resolution is most obvious when reviewing the photos in play back mode. When taking pictures, the increase in resolution isn’t as obvious. However, this is the best screen I have ever seen on a point and shoot camera.

Menu System:

This camera is very easy to use, and the menu system is very logically designed. The Q-menu button allows access to features that you would want access to more often/quickly (e.g. white balance and ISO settings). I can’t say enough about the usability of this camera, it certainly outdoes the canon. Additionally, the graphics of the menus have been improved compared to previous panasonic cameras.

Photos:

There are various scene modes to take advantage of, but the most important new feature to note is the intelligent auto mode. In the intelligent auto mode, if you are taking a picture of a person, the camera detects the face (the face detection works extremely well by the way) and puts the camera in portrait mode, automatically removing red-eye if a flash is needed (not only with a pre-flash, but digitally as well! Nice!) -This feature is available outside intelligent auto mode as well-. If you are taking a close-up of a flower or other object, the camera is automatically put in macro mode, and if you are taking a picture of a landscape the camera is put in landscape mode. It is rarely fooled and works extremely well. In the intelligent auto mode the camera automatically adjusts the ISO (which can be scary above 400). In the camera settings you can adjust the MAX ISO you want the camera to go to while set in automatic ISO. However, in the intelligent auto mode, the camera will take the ISO as high as 800 if it needs to (this doesn’t happen often). The intelligent auto mode is absolutely fantastic for novices that don’t want to have to worry about tinkering with the camera settings.

How is the picture quality? Very good. In fact I was extremely pleased with it until I compared it to the canon sd870is. Of course, most of the differences are not evident until you start analyzing the photos at 75-100% magnification. However, viewed at 100% the TZ5 dispalys more noise at all ISO settings than the canon and I prefer the smooth appearance of the photos produced by the canon cameras. The color saturation was only *slightly* better with the sd870is, but the sd870is tended to expose the pictures better in some situations, and was rarely bested by the TZ5.

The macro mode on the TZ5 is very good but not as good as I was expecting. The canon allows you to get much closer and tends to make *slightly* better photos in this mode. However, for the majority of people that aren’t going to analyze every aspect of the photo, the TZ5 will do more than an adequate job.

Lens:

This leica lens is one of the shining points for the TZ5. The zoom is incredible, fast and quiet. Also, unlike the canon there is very little distortion and also unlike the canon, I never noticed any blurred corners. The ability to go from 28-280mm is an incredible feature. I do wish that the lens was faster (only f3.3 - 4.9) compared to the sd870is (f2.8-5.8). In addition, this allows the canon to produce more depth of field (which I prefer). Overall, this is an easy win for the TZ5, no other compact can compete.

Video Mode:

I was very excited to see the videos that this camera produces. I would call them good with average sound quality. Yes, it is nice that they are such high resolution (and you can zoom during video), but the overall quality of the videos is still lacking. I made a 640×480 video with both the sd870is and the TZ5 (obviously the TZ5 can attain much higher resolution at 1280×720, but for testing purposes I wanted to make them the same resolution; the canon can only make a 640×480 video) and the canon embarrassed the TZ5 in both video quality and sound quality. On its own and for what it is, the high definition video from the TZ5 looks good, but it won’t stand up to scrutiny. Don’t buy this camera for the HD video capability and expect miracles. As others have noted, this is a point and shoot camera with video recording capability, not a stand alone high definition video recorder. *As a side note, make sure you turn off the continuous focus feature for the best videos, otherwise it is always focusing in and out*

Overall, I am very impressed with this camera. The lens is first rate, the design of both the camera body and its software is excellent. While the photo quality is very good, I would like to see photo quality (color saturation, exposure and detail) more similar to the canon and of course, like everyone else, I was hoping that the HD video would have been better. Focusing takes noticably longer than the sd870is and startup time, while great, isn’t as good as the sd870is. Despite the mentioned negatives, I definitely recommend this camera. When I travel what I am I going to take with as a compact camera? It is going to be the Panasonic TZ5.

I am sure I forgot to mention something, so If you have any questions or comments about this review, please post them and I will reply when I can! Thanks!

*Make sure you buy a high speed sd or sdhc card for this camera. It requires a high speed card for the HD video. I bought the SanDisk 4 GB Extreme III SDHC Card with MicroMate USB 2.0 Reader, and it works perfectly. Have fun!
